Progress Report

In November we sent out funds to Uganda, particularly for two purposes:
(1) To build a 2-metre high fence all round the site of the SKILL Hostel. This was to be an expensive operation, as the fence needs a solid foundation of rock and concrete. The photograph above shows the start of building this.
(2) To fit wooden lockers into the Hostel dormitories, for the children to keep their belongings. Here you can see that this work too is under way, though the lockers are not yet fixed to the walls, and they do not yet have doors.
Inviting the children in
As reported on this blog, ten children and young people, boys and girls, have moved into the Hostel. We asked Enos about these; why these particular young people, and why only ten? In particular, why were none of them from the Dustbin Boys, the gang led by Napoleon, whom we met in March, and who were vividly portrayed in 2009 by the photographs of Carol Allen Storey?

His latest email report says this:
"There are a few reasons why Napoleon’s group is not yet at the Centre.
1.      We are still waiting to have an operation permit from the probation’s office.
2.      Napoleon’s group is 19 boys; I always meet them and discuss development for them. They move as a group and once we bring them to the Centre they shall come as a group with different interests of activities to learn e.g. some want to be trained in welding or carpentry, and others want to join primary Education.
3.      Our income is still too low to feed a group of 30 children; we want them to come to the Centre while knowing that they are coming to learn, not to stay yet. I have talked to Napoleon’s group, to wait until February 2013 while I and the Board plan to mobilize more money so that we can pay for their training fees and food.
Income
Children shall be recruited according to the income that we have.
In 2013 our expenditure will be higher than 2012 because we are expecting to have 30 children at the centre by the end of 2013. More activities will be created, children will be taken to institutions to be trained, and others will attend Day Light Primary School.
In 2012 our income was raised from brick making, Nursery bed, and fumigation; it has helped us on the payment of school fees and to pay for those learning tailoring and and for food.
At Christmas we are going to sell one goat and we raise some money to keep the children at the Centre at least for Xmas days."
So pray for their happy Christmas, as you enjoy your own Christmas festivities and food!
